Miner fractured wife’s leg after assault with wood

A 40-year-old man was yesterday brought before city magistrate Fabayo Azore to face a charge that he wounded his common-law wife.

The unrepresented accused, Kevin Cross, of 111 Miles, Mahdia, pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on September 17, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Karen Harte.

The court was told that on the day in question there was an argument between Cross and Harte and he allegedly hit her about her body with a piece of wood, causing her to sustain a fractured leg in the process.

Bail was not refused but Prosecutor Seon Blackman requested that it be a substantial sum to ensure that the defendant return for trial. Bail was then set at $125,000.

When the sum for the bail was told, Cross asked the magistrate to be lenient with him and to reduce it. His request was denied. He is scheduled to return to court on October 20, when the case will be called at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for trial.
