Bus driver charged over pedestrian’s death

A bus driver was yesterday released on bail after denying that he caused the death of a pedestrian by dangerous driving.

Neville Carlette, 64, of Prospect, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing the death of Vera Ting-A-Kee by dangerous driving and was released on $200,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

It is alleged that on September 13th, 2014, on the Prospect Public Road, East Bank Demerara, Carlette caused the death of Ting-A-Kee by driving motor vehicle BMM 3099 in a manner dangerous to the public.

Attorney-at-law Paul Fung-A-Fat pleaded for bail for Carlette. He stated that about 6:45am on the day of the accident, two minibuses was driving along the road when the other bus pulled in front of Carlette’s bus. He said the pedestrian, however, disembarked and was attempting to cross the road when she was fatally injured. She was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Prosecutor Michael Grant had no objection to bail, which was granted. However, as a condition for bail, the chief magistrate ordered Neville to report to the Providence Police Station every two weeks on the Fridays.

The matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for October 24.
