Vagrant remanded over theft of car mirrors

A vagrant, accused of stealing the rear view mirrors from a car, was remanded to prison yesterday.

Wayne Gibson, 42, denied that he, on October 2, at Princes Street, stole two rear view mirrors valued at $40,000, from a car belonging to Lionel Seenarine.

Prosecutor Michael Grant told a city court that Gibson was seen taking off the mirrors from the parked car. An alarm was subsequently raised and he was arrested.

Gibson, who told the court that he was a vagrant, refuted the prosecutor’s claim that he removed the mirrors. “I was sleeping on cardboard under the trailer,” explained Gibson, who added that he only became aware of the theft after he saw two men running away with a black plastic bag. He said that the men dropped the bag. Gibson said he then proceeded to check the bag and found the two mirrors in it. Moments later, he added, a crowd raced after him and were shouting “Is he! Is he!”

“So I run and jump into the koker,” he said.

Based on his explanation, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry entered a not guilty plea for Gibson. She then refused him bail and transferred the case to Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Six, where it will be called on October 7.
