Safe at GoodWood Racing torched open, $2.1M stolen

Three partially masked men broke into GoodWood Racing Service early Saturday morning and carted off $2.1 million and a laptop.

The robbers apparently had intimate knowledge of the security arrangements for the building and avoided the lower flat, which was outfitted with a camera, by creating an opening through the floor directly under the office where the stolen articles were housed.

told Stabroek News yesterday that the three men were first spotted on video footage at approximately 12:20h in the north western side of the compound. He said that the intruders moved across to the southern end of the compound where they broke a window on the second floor and gained entry into the building.

Equipped with a blow torch and a rope among other implements, the businessman said that the trio then ripped out the wires of the security cameras on the first floor in his office before jumping through.

Singh added that the burglars made their way to a safe which they blow-torched and emptied of $2.1 million. In addition, a $120,000 laptop that was kept at the right of the safe, was also stolen.

Singh said he believes that the intruders had intimate knowledge of the building because “they avoided the cameras downstairs”.

The matter was reported to the police and statements were taken, the businessman further said.

Singh told this newspaper that his business was robbed a few years ago. That robbery, he added, forced him to tighten up security, inclusive of installing a reinforced steel door.
