Doubleheader to kick off Mayor’s Cup Sunday at Den Amstel

The 2014 edition of the annual Mayor’s Cup knock-out football tournament will officially commence on Sunday October 19th with a doubleheader slated to be contested at the Den Amstel community ground, West Demerara.

Tournament coordinator Lennox Arthur during an invited comment said :This is a tournament we have been running for last 20 years and we are still working with our sponsorship. The Mayor’s Cup always is a good tournament where everyone does come out and support. I expect the tournament to be very good and very competitive.”

The feature contest of the matchday will witness Mocha-based side Riddim Squad battling West Demerara unit Uitvlugt Warriors from 16:00hrs.

In the opening fixture of the tournament at 14:00hrs, East Bank of Demerara unit Grove Hi-Tech will faceoff with West Demerara outfit Eagles FC.

Winners of the event will pocket $1,000,000 and the championship trophy while the second placed side will receive $500,000 and the respective trophy. The third and fourth positioned sides will receive $200,000 and $100,000 along with the corresponding accolade respectively.

On the individual side, prizes will be awarded for the tourney’s most valuable player (MVP), highest goal scorer, best defender and best goalkeeper.
