Covent Garden man killed in East Bank accident

A Covent Garden man was killed early yesterday morning after a Green Ice taxi slammed into him along the East Bank Demerara public road while he was crossing to catch a bus.

Dindiyal Persaud, 54, of Lot 54 Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara died at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital at Diamond, where he was taken after he was struck down.

The accident occurred at Prospect along the East Bank public road. He was carried to the hospital by the taxi driver, who is currently in custody at the Providence Police Station.

According to information received, the driver of the taxi was an acquaintance to Persaud’s family

and he had lived in Persaud’s village for a number of years.

Phulmatie Mohan, Persaud’s sister, said he was headed to her home to celebrate Diwali with her and her family. She said a plastic bag was found on his person with two green mangoes. “He was bringing that for us to make sour… First my husband and my mother… and my sons now my brother… No matter how hard I try to make it better it gets worst,” she said mournfully.

Mohan lost her husband and mother a few years ago; both dying in one month. She has also buried three sons, one of whom died in a road accident. She lamented that each of the deaths had been on holidays and it seemed no matter how she tried to keep her family together they always died.

Mohan said the news of her brother’s death was another traumatic blow to her, since her brothers were all she had left.

Mohan said she received a call around 6.15 am from a stranger, who told her that her brother had been involved in an accident and she should go to the Diamond hospital immediately.

She said when she arrived there, the doctors barred her from seeing Persaud because he was in a severe condition and had sustained serious injuries. She said he died around 8.30 am just as the doctors were about to transfer him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Persaud leaves to mourn his five siblings and two children.
