Accused was caught sleeping in house he broke into – court told

A man who was found sleeping in a house he had apparently broken into in the owner’s absence, was yesterday remanded to prison.

Justin Grasper appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1 and pleaded not guilty to breaking into the house of Dr Khemraj Kanhai at Waterloo Street, George-town, between October 26 and November 10 and stealing a quantity of items worth $920,000.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, on October 26 about 12:00 hrs, Kanhai secured his home and left for Bartica. While he was in Bartica on November 10, he received a phone call from the police that his house had been broken into. He then made his way back to Georgetown and upon returning he discovered the items missing.

The prosecution related that Grasper was also found in the house sleeping and some of the items were discovered on him.

Grant objected to bail based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence and noted that Grasper had been charged before with simple larceny.

Bail was refused and the matter is adjourned for December 4.
