Porter fined for assaulting vendor at outpost

An elderly porter was yesterday fined for punching a vendor at a police outpost and also ordered to compensate her for damage to her property.

Tim Everley, 69, will be jailed if he fails to pay the fine and compensate Odessa Clark.

The charges stated that on November 22, at Stabroek, Georgetown, he damaged a quantity of sunglasses carrying a total value of $13,500 belonging to Clark, and that he assaulted the woman on the same day.

The prosecution stated that Everley, who was under the influence of alcohol, pushed one of his friends into Clark’s sunglasses rack in the Demico area, causing damage to some of the glasses.

The court heard that the incident was reported and Everley was arrested and taken to the police outpost at Stabroek, where he punched Clark to her left breast.

When asked by the magistrate whether he had anything to say as regards the charges, Everley said, “Ah have nothing to say. I will pay back the money.” He also pleaded with the magistrate to grant him time to repay the money in portions.

He was fined $5,000 for the charge of assault or seven days imprisonment. He was also ordered to repay Clark $13,500 for the damage in a period of four weeks, failing which he will be jailed for three months.
