Leopold St edges Festival City in sudden death

Former champions Leopold Street punched their ticket to the quarterfinal round, edging Festival City Street Fighters 3-2 on sudden death kicks when the Guinness Greatest of the Streets round of 16 stage got underway last night.

With a goal unable to be found at the National Cultural Centre tarmac in the normal and extra time intervals, Festival City would take a 1-0 lead in the penalty shoot-out as they netted in their first attempt.

Leopold Street would quickly respond as Omallo Williams found the back of the net from the halfway spot in their first allotted strike. It would then become 2-2 in the second round of the penalty shoot-out as both teams scored from the mark.

Leopold Street would then be given a chance to seal the win as Festival City missed the target in their third and final attempt. However they would fail to capitalize on their advantage as they missed from the distance to send the fixture into the sudden death round.

The scores would then remain 2-2 in the fourth round of penalty kicks as both sides failed to convert from the distance. The former winners would then be given another opportunity to complete the win as Festival City missed once more from the spot in the fifth round.

Leopold Street would make no mistake this time from the mark as Williams buried his left-footed attempt down the middle of the goal to ignite wild celebrations on the field from their onrushing fan base.

With the win, Leopold Street will now await the winner of the West Front Road and Island All-Stars matchup. The remaining seven matchups were to be contested last night. (Duncan Saul)
