An accused carjacker was yesterday refused bail after a court heard that he allegedly wrapped a seat belt around his victim’s neck before dumping him out of his car
The charge against Trayon Anderson was that he, in the company of two other persons, on April 4, robbed taxi driver Mortimer Trim of a car, valued $2.6 million along with a quantity of cash, a wristwatch and a cell phone.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One.
Dexter Todd, his attorney, in his attempt to secure his client’s bail, told the court that Anderson is 23-years-old, he is married and his wife is three months pregnant. He added that Anderson denied knowledge of the allegation in front of the police and Trim.
He also stated that the attack occurred in April but his client was only arrested last Thursday. Todd labelled the case against his client as ‘’baseless’’ while he pleaded with the magistrate to grant bail in reasonable sum.
But Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail based on the nature, seriousness and prevalence of the offence. He told the court that on the day in question Anderson along with two other persons boarded Trim’s car from Parika. He added that when they were in the vicinity of Greenfield Park, Anderson, who was sitting behind Trim, took the seat belt and wrapped it around the man’s neck.
Trim, before being pushed out of his car, was relieved of a quantity of cash from his pants pocket, his wristwatch and cell phone. The attack was subsequently reported at the Parika Police Station.
Grant also stated that Anderson is known to Trim and although his name was mentioned to the police, they had a hard time locating him. He noted that Anderson, who travelled with Trim on more than one occasion, had identified himself to the taxi driver as “Detective Jones.”
Bail was refused and he is to return to court on November 7.
