75-yr-old bus driver charged with verbally abusing police

A senior citizen was yesterday placed on $5,000 bail after he appeared in court charged with verbally abusing a police officer.

John Wiltshire, 75, of Number 50 Village, Corentyne pleaded guilty to a charge which stated that on January 9, on Commerce Street, Georgetown, he made use of abusive language to Sergeant Scott.

Prosecutor Adduni Inniss, told the court that on the day in question, Sergeant 15204 Scott was on patrol duty in the vicinity of Commerce Street when he observed a build-up of traffic.

Upon checking he realized that the defendant who was the driver of minibus BPP 1721 was the cause for the obstruction. When the accused was approached by the officer and told of the offence, he became annoyed and verbally abused him.

However, Wiltshire disputed the facts.

“The prosecutor facts is nonsense,” the unrepresented man said. “The sergeant was nowhere in the area. I didn’t abuse the sergeant.”

After his continued disagreement with the police facts, Magistrate Annette Singh recorded a not guilty plea on his behalf and placed him on $5,000 bail.

He was ordered to return to court on January 28, when his trial will commence.
