Slingerz showdown with Riddim Squad expected to be a thriller

In what is expected to be a thrilling showdown, Slingerz FC will lock horns with Riddim Squad from 9pm when the quarterfinals of the Mayor’s Cup Knockout Football tourney starts today at the GFC ground in Bourda.

Forced to work in their 2-0 defeat of the Mahaica Determinators in the earlier round, the Vergenoegen giants hope to seal their second consecutive semi-final appearance and will be relying on their attacking trident Anthony Abrams, Devon Millington and Vurlon Mills to fire them to victory.

Never the ones to back down from a challenge, the Mocha-based unit will be brimming with confidence following their 3-1 victory over Golden Grove and will attempt to register another upset in the event led by their family connections of the Hopes, the Ramsays and the Stewarts.

The opening affair of the evening will pit knockout artists Pele FC against the Guyana Police Force (GPF) from 7pm. Overcoming Pouderoyen 1-0 in a bruising affair, the lawmen will attempt to arrest their impending challengers and will depend talents like Rawle Haynes, Lerone Charles and Rondell Arthur to lead from the front when action commences.

Squeaking past Cougars 3-2 in the previous fixture, the famed blue and yellow unit will once again aim to justify their status as knockout specialists with the fearsome foursome Konata Manning, Shemroy Arthur, Jamal Cozier and Keoma Gravesande piloting them to the semi-final round.

Rawle Jones, Pele FC coach, in an invited comment to this newspaper said, “Preparation has been coming very good so far. Right now we have more coaches on board to help in the tactical and technical aspect. Everything is set up properly from the executive so we are getting the team fully out.” He also said, “Again we have been in this situation before. Meeting police, I am not boasting but I am thankful, I am confident. I am 80% confident for now.”

Winners of the event will receive $1,000,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $300,000 and the respective title. The third and fourth-positioned teams will walk away with $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
