Child rights commission, CIOG mourn tragedy on Burma Road

The Rights of the Child Commission has called for a day of mourning and reflection and a minute of silence to be observed in all schools countrywide, in the wake of the tragedy on Burma Road, Mahaicony where six children and their teacher lost their lives.

The commissioners are profoundly saddened by the tragedy and join the rest of the nation in mourning.

“The RCC is driven by the conviction that the children of our nation are our most precious and valued possession and resources. Their deaths, in such bizarre circumstances, are always difficult to (comprehend),” the group said in a press release. The group extends sincerest condolences to the families of the deceased.

The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) is also dismayed by the tragedy calling it “a great loss to the families and our nation.” The group extended deepest sympathies to the grieving relatives.

“Let us be comforted by the fact that Almighty God is in control of our destinies, and this is His will. Let us pray that God Almighty will grant us strength to bear this loss with patience and perseverance, with the true and sure knowledge that will grant peace and comfort to those who have lost,” the CIOG said in a press statement.
