Gun owner charged with killing bystander outside Palm Court

Andre Gomez, who is accused of fatally shooting a bystander while firing at another person during an altercation outside Palm Court on Sunday, was yesterday charged with murder.

Gomez appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1, where he was not required to plead to the capital charge. It is alleged that on May 10th, at Middle Street, Cummingsburg, he murdered Nigel Isaacs.

Isaacs, 39, of Guyhoc Gardens, succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital hours after he was admitted in an unconscious state. He was said to have been brain dead on admission.

The police had said the shooting occurred 25 minutes after midnight on Sunday, when the driver of hire car accidentally collided with another vehicle that was parked on Main Street. “A licensed firearm holder who was in the vicinity confronted the driver and discharged several rounds in his direction,” the police said in a statement, while it noted that the shooter missed the driver and struck Isaacs to his head.

No details about the charge were presented in court but Prosecutor Bharat Mangru noted that after the shooting the spent shell that was recovered matched Gomez’s gun. He added that a post-mortem examination was performed yesterday and the warhead was taken for analysis.

The accused was represented by attorney Mark Waldron, who in brief submissions noted that the police were informed that someone attempted to rob Gomez, who ventured outside of the Palm Court to see what was transpiring before the shooting occurred.

The matter was adjourned to June 1st.
