Guyana female team loses twice at CARICOM c/ships

Team Guyana’s winless streak at the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s Championships continued yesterday as they went down to Jamaica 70-43 at the Multi Sports Complex in Tortola.

Miriam McKenzie led the Guyanese in the loss with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds while the next best scorers were Kean Andrews and Nichola Jacobs with seven and five points respectively.

For the Jamaicans, Tarita Gordon netted 23 points while grabbing four rebounds and two assists. She was supported by Yanique Gordon who registered 15 points and seven rebounds, Rashida Aikens who recorded nine points and eight rebounds and Dhanyel Johnson who netted eight points.

Utilizing a starting five consisting of McKenzie, Lewis, Ginelle Ifill, Tamara Hunter and Jacobs, Guyana would quickly fall behind as they were outscored 18-10 in the first period.

Jamaica would then extend their lead going into the half time interval, outshooting Guyana 16-14 to take a 34-24 lead. The third period would witness the Jamaicans extending their advantage as they netted 17 points while reducing their foes to 10 points to take a 51-34 lead.

They would then closeout the match in the final stanza, outscoring Guyana once more by a 19-9 margin. In their tourney opener on Monday at the same venue, Guyana would suffer their first defeat as an opening first quarter blitz from hosts the British Virgin Islands helped secure a 64-61 victory.

Lewis led the Guyanese with 23 points and eight rebounds while Captain McKenzie recorded a double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds and Ifill netted six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Contributing six and five points respectively were Timike Joseph-De-Rouche and Jacobs. On the other hand, Tamara Phillips registered figures of 28 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the win.

She was supported by Tafara Phillips who recorded nine points, nine rebounds and three assists,

Shauliqua Fahie who claimed nine points, four rebounds and three assists, Joy Victor who netted six points and five rebounds and Tiffany Jennings who netted six points.

Fielding a starting five consisting of Lewis, McKenzie, Ifill, Jacobs and Hunter, Guyana quickly fell behind as the hosts claimed the opening period 27-12. The Guyanese would rebound in the second stanza, outscoring the hosts 18-11 to go into half-time trailing 38-30.

The visitors would maintain the momentum in the third period as they outscored the British Virgin Islands 18-15 to go into the final period trailing 53-48.

Guyana would eventually fall agonizingly close in their attempt to overturn the lead, clinching the period 13-11 as the hosts held on for the victory. Guyana will conclude their group campaign today at the same venue against Barbados.

 

The other members of the squad led by Head-Coach Julian Haynes and Assistance Kirk Fraser are Sonia Rodney, Shanna Chester, Kean Andrews, Lowquantor Gibson, Necosia Mitchell and Tanika Alphonso. Completing the travelling contingent is FIBA accredited referee Sherwin Henry.

Meanwhile group-A of the tournament will comprise of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Virgin Islands.
