Guard jailed for three years over drug smuggling attempt

A security guard who admitted to trafficking a quantity of cocaine and cannabis at the Ogle International Airport was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail.

The allegation against Kevin Sandy is that on July 8th, at the Ogle International Airport, he had in his possession 2.238 kilogrammes of cannabis and 1.012 kilogrammes of cocaine.

The 30-year-old resident of Lot 37 East LaPenitence Housing Scheme pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 2.

Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that Sandy was heading to Barbados via the Ogle International Airport when he was seen acting in a suspicious manner. As a result, ranks from the Anti-Narcotics Unit stopped him and conducted a search on his person and they uncovered the drugs in his bag. He was told of the offence, arrested and under caution admitted that someone told him to collect the narcotics from a garbage bin and a toilet tank at the airport.

“Everybody makes mistake in life, my worship, and I just begging for leniency, please,” Sandy said.

Apart from the three year prison sentence, Sandy was also ordered to pay a $6,156,900 fine, which is a total of three times the street value of both drugs.

After he was sentenced, Sandy bowed his head and smiled as he was escorted to the prisoners’ holding area.
