Woman in Grove apartment died of pneumonia

Eulenea Charles, whose body was found in her home in a decomposing state died as a result of pneumonia and while an autopsy on her baby was inconclusive, it is believed that the infant died as a result of starvation, according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum.

Speaking to reporters yesterday he said that a post-mortem was conducted earlier in the day. There were suggestions that the woman and her child were either murdered or that she might have committed suicide. The post-mortem has definitively ruled out any foul play in either deaths.

Charles and her infant daughter were found dead at their Lot 407 Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, apartment last Saturday morning after neighbours could no longer endure a stench which was coming from the building.

The house is divided into two apartments; one was occupied by Charles and her family, while a man and his girlfriend lived in the other. The couple had told Stabroek News that a pungent smell began emanating from the windows of Charles’ apartment some time ago. However, they did not pay any attention to it as they had assumed that it was spoiled meat.

After the odour worsened, they decided to call the police. The police broke the door to Charles’ apartment and found her and her daughter’s decomposing bodies in the bedroom.

Persons in the area had noticed the woman’s absence but did not think much of it as she kept to herself. Around the same time that they stopped seeing her, Charles’ husband left for the interior, where he works. The post-mortem examinations were delayed to facilitate his arrival to identify the remains.
