Eight inches of rain in 24 hours

Dear Editor,

My weather station in Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown recorded 200 mm of rain for the calendar day, midnight to midnight, July 15, 2015. That is 8 inches of rain in 24 hours. A further inch fell by 6 am today, July 16. (1 inch = 25.4 mm)

The main rainfall sessions and amounts in millimetres were:

July 15, 1.40 am to 2.35 am: 11 mm

July 15, 4.25 am to 7.00 am: 16 mm

July 15, 2.50 pm to July 16, 4.50 am: 199 mm

The last main session indicates that almost 8 inches of rain fell in those 14 hours approximately between 3 pm and 5 am July 15-16!

The figures you report cannot be accurate; the Ministry of Public Infrastructure is being badly served by its source of data.

I know that the rain gauge at the Georgetown Botanic Gardens was reliable up to a few years ago, and their reading was consistent with mine for May 31, 2015 when we had the last big rain, so something must be seriously amiss this time.

Yours faithfully,
Alfred Bhulai
