Ganja for eyesight plea fails to move magistrate

A plea that he smokes cannabis to cure his blindness on his doctor’s recommendation failed to move the court and a man found himself sentenced to six months community service as well as a $3,000 fine yesterday.

Simon Primo, 41, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that he had 3 grammes of cannabis in his possession on July 20.

The court heard that Primo was riding along Shiv Chanderpaul Drive when police noticed him acting suspiciously. As a result, they stopped him and searched him and found the prohibited substance.

Primo, who claims to be blind in one eye, told the court that a doctor had recommended the use of marijuana as it would increase his chances of regaining his eyesight.

Magistrate Annette Singh was not impressed and handed down the sentence to the convict who became upset and was very vocal about not doing any community service as he was escorted back to the holding cell.
