Pan Am Games athletes performed below expectations

Guyana’s Pan American Games campaign ended discouragingly without a medal on Thursday in Toronto, Canada.

Only one athlete (Winston George) from the five disciplines contested made it past the qualifying rounds.

George was the best local performer at the Games after finishing sixth in the 400m final on Thursday night.

The other two track and field athletes Janea McCammon and Adam Harris along with the swimmers, badminton, squash and rugby players, all recorded forgettable performances at the Games which concludes tomorrow.

President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson told this publication yesterday that the results recorded by the three track and field athletes were below what the AAG expected.

“We need to make some enquiries and come up with some answers” Hutson said. “When you look at the times, it was below what we expected even though George made the final. Two of our athletes were knocked out in the first round and all things being equal their performances were below what was expected.”

The Guyana national 7s rugby outfit placed seventh out of the eight teams, losing five of their six games. However, manager of the sojourn, Terrence Grant maintained that once there is more funding and subsequent international exposure, the team can ‘climb the ladder.’

“We need to have more exposure outside of the Caribbean” Grant said yesterday. “It is a different level and we need to play beyond the Caribbean circuit on a consistent level in order to climb the ladder.”

Grant added that ‘’we need to play more teams in South America. We have a small pool of only five clubs and less than 200 players. In some countries they’re some clubs that have more than 200 rugby players.”
