Just Call Me Boss lives up to name

Even if it was just for one day, Just Call Me Boss was in charge of all local thoroughbreds.

Yesterday, the Dark Brown Gelding galloped to a shocking gate to pole victory in the feature C and Lower, eight furlong event of the President’s Cup staged at the Rising Sun Turf Club.

With Trinidadian jockey, Nela Mohamed in the stirrups, the champion race horse of the K Jagdeo Racing Stables sent turfites at the club’s track into a frenzy as he sprinted to an upset victory over some of Guyana’s premier trotters including Guyana Cup winner, CP Got Even who played second fiddle.

Fans were buzzing with excitement in anticipation of a victory for the favourite, but the gelding trampled the pre-race hype and expectations to win the fixture and pocket the appetizing $1.2M first prize and the large glistening champion’s trophy compliments of the Trophy Stall.

Here is how the race unfolded: Just Call Me Boss set a blistering pace straight out the gate and established himself as the early pacesetter. CP Got Even then changed gears to close the gap on the leader, pulling along Three D and Spit Fire in the gallop.

Ridden by jockey Michael Semple, CP Got Even fetching an eye popping 123lbs, moved into contention down the final stretch but could not sustain her run and catch the flying gelding.

Just Call Me Boss who fetched 111lbs, got a late split on the rails and dived through to score by a half-length on the fast, dusty track.

CP Got Even’s owner R. Poonai would not be too disappointed since he pocketed the $600,000 second place winnings. Half that amount went to Three D’s owners for finishing third in its second outing.

Meanwhile, Minister of State, Joe Harmon was in attendance on behalf of His Excellency, President David Granger.

During a brief speech, Harmon told the packed turf club that the government is going to make horse racing a premier discipline by pumping more funds into the ‘Sport of Kings’.
