National cricketers for physical fitness theoretical work

Defending Professional Cricket League (PCL) Four-Day champions, the Guyana Jaguars will take time off their ongoing pre-season training sessions to engage in a bit of theoretical physical training at the Georgetown Cricket Club pavilion.

The session is being facilitated by Top End Performance Training Instructor Kezqweyah Yisrael who told Stabroek Sports that he is aiming to instill the importance of good physical maintenance as well as educating the players on the importance of setting measures in place for a life after sports.

“Many athletes earn a lot of money and after sports some end up looking for jobs so it’s all about good money management,” he said. Yisrael also said that he wants to help the cricketers to “Think higher” than they are currently thinking, adding that it is very important as a professional athlete to remain fit, personally or for a match.

“I want to brush up on the importance of being fit and staying in-game shape because some of the top athletes stay on top of their game by doing so and I will also be showing them video footage”.

The trainer explained that while the seminar will be good for highlighting the necessary steps of becoming a top athlete, the lessons must be taught regularly.

“First of all, it cannot be a one-time thing because it’s about conditioning but I don’t expect them to jump on it because it has to be an ongoing process.”

Yisrael said with regular sessions he believes that the players will be able to fully grasp the importance of staying fit as professionals as well as having vast knowledge of proper financial management in order to map out a successful career after cricket.

The session is scheduled to commence at 9:00hrs today.
