GDF edges Buxton United 1-0 in bruising affair

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) recorded their first win of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League, relegating Buxton United to their second consecutive loss via a 1-0 score line on Thursday at the Tucville Community Centre ground.

Delroy Fraser fired the winning shot for the army men in the 44th minute of a cagey and bruising affair devoid of many chances. With the win, the Camp Ayanganna based outfit move into the fourth position with three points from two games.

The East Coast of Demerara giants remain in the cellar position with no points from their two fixtures.

Desperate for a positive result following a 2-3 defeat to Monedderlust FC in their opening fixture, the army unit fired the first warning shot in the 27th minute compliments of Tyrone Lewis.

Racing into the left side of the box to latch onto a through pass, Lewis unleashed a powerful effort which was denied by the goalkeeper Jason Cromwell low to his right.

With chances coming few and far between in front of the large gathering, the speedy Fraser netted what would prove to be the fixture’s only conversion one minute before the half-time interval.

Receiving the ball within the left side of the penalty box, Fraser, upon turning his marker thumped a left-footed shot into the right hand corner of the net, giving Cromwell no chance.

Selwyn Isaacs almost added to their lead in the 45th+1 minute, curling a free kick from 28 yards out on the left side of the field, wide of the left hand corner of the net.

The combative nature of the fixture then continued in the second period, with both sides failing to create any threatening opportunities as GDF held on to secure the vital win. In the feature fixture, home side Fruta Conquerors overcame Monedderlust FC by a 2-1 score line.

Action in the tournament will continue tomorrow at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground with a doubleheader. In the opening fixture, Monedderlust will oppose Slingerz FC from 18:00hrs while home side GFC will tackle Alpha United from 20:30hrs in the feature affair.
