Car wash worker remanded over armed robbery

An employee of a car wash situated on Mandela Avenue was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with committing armed robbery against a woman whose vehicle he’d washed days before.

It is alleged that Marcus Clarke, 20, of 459 East Ruimveldt, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, robbed Voulda Stanford of a quantity of keys valued $35,000.

Clarke pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Presenting the case, Prosecutor Deniro Jones stated that at the time of the encounter, Stanford was in her truck, which she usually conducts business from. Having heard a noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, she disembarked and was confronted by Clarke and two others, who were said to be armed with a gun. The perpetrators demanded Clarke hand over her keys, which she did and they made their escape.

Stanford explained to the court that she was acquainted with the young man, who she said had washed her vehicle two days before the robbery occurred. The complainant said also that the stolen bunch of keys, which have not been recovered, included keys to her home as well as her vehicle.

Magistrate Ann McLennan adjourned the matter to October 20 for statements and Clarke was remanded to prison until his return to court on that date.
