Wismar octogenarian found dead

An elderly man was found lying dead in a pool of blood in his Linden home last Saturday and his son who was reportedly recently released from a jail in Suriname is the prime suspect.

The dead man has been identified as 83-year-old Andrew Reid of Canvas City, Wismar. Stabroek News was unable to make contact with the man’s relatives but according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, when Reid was found there was a wound to his left side head from which he had bled.

Asked about a possible motive, Blanhum told Stabroek News that a small quantity of jewellery was missing from the house. Based on this, it would appear that investigators are treating it as a robbery/murder.

According to Blanhum, the man’s wife left for church around 9 am and when she returned several hours later around noon she made the shocking discovery. Stabroek News was told that Reid was found in his bedroom.

He said that the man’s 53-year-old son is the suspect. Detectives have been unable to locate the man who is said to be a resident of Amelia’s Ward, Linden.

According to Blanhum, detectives will be engaging their counterparts in Suriname with a view to confirming reports that the suspect had served time in a Suriname jail. He could not say what the man had been charged with, adding that all this would be included in a correspondence that will be dispatched across the border shortly.

Police investigations are ongoing.
