Five stage cycle race gets cracking today

Four days of international cycling at its very best in beautiful Guyana starts today in the Ancient County.

Riders from Suriname, Barbados, Jamaica and Colombia along with the cream of the nation’s wheelsmen will begin the grueling five-stage Tour of Guyana from 7:30hrs in Corriverton, Berbice for the coveted trophy and lucrative cash incentives.

After the initial stages today (Corriverton to New Amsterdam then Rosignol to Carifesta Avenue), the ninth annual 266-mile tour continues to the West Coast of Demerara tomorrow.

Action continues in the Cinderella County on Saturday followed by the final stage on Sunday from Linden to Homestretch Avenue.

Cyclists such as Raynauth Jeffrey, Hamza Eastman, Jaime Ramirez, Darren Matthews (all of Team Coco’s), Alanzo Greaves (Mengoni), Orville Hinds, Marlon Williams, Michael Anthony (Team Gillette Evolution), Geron Williams (Champion Systems/Stans No Tubes), Jamal Eastman and Marloe Rodman (Heat Wave) along with Paul DeNobrega (Team Alanis) will be the wheelsmen to watch.

In excess of $1.2M in total will be up for grabs. The first senior cyclist will pocket $200,000. (Emmerson Campbell)
