Family suspects foul play in mason’s death

The family of a man who recently succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), due to severe head injuries allegedly sustained in a fall from the tray of pick-up, believes that there is more to his death than has been reported.

Sesh Kumar Rajnarayan, 28, a mason of Lot 5 Triumph Backlands, East Coast Demerara (ECD), succumbed at the GPH on November 1st, a week after he was admitted in an unconscious state.

Radha Rajnarayan, his mother, told Stabroek News she last saw her only son alive on October 23rd, when he left home with his employer to visit a friend’s birthday party in Berbice.

The woman said she was told by the employer that Sesh and another friend occupied the tray of the vehicle, where he sat on a cooler. However, he reportedly fell off the vehicle while it was moving.

The accident occurred on October 24th, at Mahaicony.

Traffic Chief Deon Moore told Stabroek News that the accident was reported at the Mahaicony Police Station and is currently being investigated. He said that preparations are also being made to have the file sent to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice as early as this week. The employer was arrested and subsequently released on $100,000 station bail.

Radha and her family, however, believe that there was foul play in Sesh’s death, particularly in light of the injuries he sustained.

She said Sesh had visited the party and his wife had even spoken to him on October 24th, when he told her everything was fine and he was on his way home. However, attempts to get him on the phone almost an hour after were unsuccessful as there was no answer. Soon after, the employer contacted the family and informed that Sesh had been in an accident. The woman said she enquired if her son sustained a lot of injuries and demanded to speak to him but was only told that he just had some bruises about his face and was doing well and would be taken shortly to the hospital for medical treatment.

As a result, Radha said she and her husband immediately rushed to the GPH’s Accident and Emergency Unit, where they found Sesh. She said she could hardly recognise him since his entire face was swollen and his teeth were missing. His hands were also badly injured. She said it appeared as though someone beat her son. “The injuries he got on his hand, when I see him is like somebody did hitting him and he bar his hand to block,” the grieving mother noted.

She also said she immediately enquired from the doctor about Sesh’s condition and was informed that he was in a critical condition since he sustained swelling to the brain and a fractured skull. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to the severity of his injuries.

A post-mortem examination subsequently revealed that he died as a result of head trauma but no family member was present to witness the autopsy, which has left the man’s family suspicious of the finding.

Sesh is survived by his wife and their eight-month-old baby.
