Western Tigers, Riddim Squad to battle for $2m

It will be West Ruimveldt versus Mocha when Western Tigers lock horns with Riddim Squad from 21:00hrs today in the grand finale of the 5th Annual GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Championship at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.

The fixture will be the matchup of the event’s initial favourites as Western Tigers sealed their place following a 3-0 win over New Amsterdam United while Riddim Squad downed Santos 3-2 on penalty kicks at the semi-final stage.

Seen by many as the most balanced team in the event, the Georgetown unit have not disappointed thus far, registering a formidable 13 goals across three matches.

Randolph Wagner has been the main threat for the Tigers with a tourney leading six conversions while Darren Benjamin, Jamal Pedro and Dwayne Ali have recorded two goals each.

With regards to their defensive numbers, the West Ruimveldt giant has also been formidable, with only one goal recorded against their name. For the Mocha-based unit, it will be their second trip to the finale after losing in the 2012 edition.

Similar to their impending foe, Riddim Squad possess a high-scoring offence, with nine goals recorded in their three fixtures. Sceyon Hope heads the offence with three goals while sibling Sheldon Hope and Teon Jones have netted twice.

On the defensive end, the Mocha unit has the second best recorded record as they have shipped in two goals in their three matches. In the third place playoff at 19:00hrs, it will be Berbice versus Georgetown when Santos opposes New Amsterdam United.

It will be a matchup of equal foes as both sides possess identical numbers on the offensive and defensive ends. Offensively, both sides have recorded nine goals each. For Berbice, Jamal Butts has scored three times along with two strikes from Delroy Ferdinand and Keon Williams.

With regards to Santos, Dwayne McLean, Andy Parvatan and Travis Fitzpatrick are the top shots with two goals apiece.

The winner of the tourney will receive two million dollars and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place finishers will pocket one million, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively along with the corresponding accolade.
