Winners Connection going for three-peat

The mining town will be divided today when two-time defending champs Federal Winners Connection face off with Silver Shattas in the grand finale of the 3rd annual UDFA/GT Beer Knockout Championship today from 20:15hrs.

Winners Connection will attempt to clinch an impressive three-peat at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground after defeating fierce rival Topp XX by a 1-0 score line in the semi-final round on Wednesday at the same locale.

With the scores locked at 0-0 in front of a large crowd, an unfortunate own goal in the 89th minute by Ruel Williams extinguished Topp XX’s hopes of a final’s berth.

Williams in his attempt to clear the resulting danger from within the penalty box, inadvertently placed the ball into the back of the net, giving his custodian Tevin Crawford no chance and sealing Winners Connections third consecutive berth in the finale.

Meanwhile, Silver Shattas clinched their berth to the final after dismissing Net-rockers by a 2-0 score line. Colwyn Drakes opened the scoring as he found the back of the net in the 18th minute.

Rawlston Fraser then sealed the score line as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet two minutes before the commencement of the half time interval. The losing semi-finalists will now face off from 18:15hrs in the third place playoff.

Winner of the tourney will pocket $800,000 and the championship trophy while the second placed unit will walk away with $500,000 and the corresponding accolade.

For the third-placed unit, a package of $300,000 and a trophy will be up for grabs while the fourth-positioned outfit will collect $200,000 and the respective trophy.

On the individual side, accolades will be awarded for the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goal Scorer, Best Goal-keeper, Best Defender and Best Coach. Similarly, an award will also be issued for the Most Disciplined Team.
