Williams plans to reshape volleyball in Demerara

Newly-elected President of the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) Trevor Williams yesterday promised to reshape the state of the sport in Demerara.

The former Alliance for Change (AFC) Parliamentarian was elected when the association held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) Coast Guards Boardroom.

President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) John Flores, who was present at the AGM, said it was clear that Williams had received unanimous support from the Demerara volleyball community and as such, he is thoroughly satisfied with the outcome.

National Coach Ian Wills was named Vice-President while Jana Edghill (Secretary), Alistair Griffith (Treasurer), Odile Broomes (Assistant Secretary Treasurer) and Allana Bese (Public Relations Officer), were the other executives elected.

Williams, during his remarks thanked Flores and the Demerara community for the support and promised to play the role needed for the expansion of the sport across Demerara.

He said Linden has a huge potential and said that the DVA will be placing special emphasis on the mining town this year.

He also said that a National School’s tournament is one of the main ventures the association is expected to tackle. It is also a dream of his to see some 30 volleyball clubs in Demerara over the next year.

The DVA is expected to commence their 2016 calendar of activities in two week’s time with a mini tournament. However, Williams stated that he was not too sure on the details of the first event but indicated that a notice will be sent out once all the elements are in place.
