Prisoner caught with ganja gets three more years on eve of release

A prisoner will be spending three more years in the Camp Street jail after he was caught with ganja just days before he was due to be released.

Leonard Shury, 41, yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of having 85 grammes of cannabis in his possession for trafficking at the prison.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan that the accused, on January 19, had just completed sanitary duty and was being processed to go back into the prison when he was subjected to a search by prison officers.

The search uncovered the cannabis and he was arrested.

The accused apologised to the court and asked for mercy. He also said that the drug was intended for someone else.

The Chief Magistrate subsequently sentenced him to three years in jail and ordered him to pay a fine of $127,000.
