Simpson confident of reaching fourth Olympiad

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Sprinter Sherone Simpson says she is in great shape and is confident she can qualify for this year’s Rio Olympics – her fourth straight Olympiad.

The 31-year-old Jamaican, entering the twilight of her career, said her times had been improving steadily and would add a new dimension to the upcoming season.

“I would be so humbled. It would be unreal if I should make the Games, especially in the 100m and 200m,” Simpson told the Gleaner newspaper here.

“So I am working hard towards that, and it will be such a blessing for me, and I would be so happy.”

Simpson is yet to win individual Olympic gold but was part of the gold-medal winning sprint replay Jamaica women’s team at the 2004 Games in Athens.

She was also good enough to win 100 metres silver in Beijing four years later, trailing home compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Simpson, who had a decent 2015 in winning gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto, said she was focused on preparing for upcoming national trials.

“I think I am [ready]. I am healthy, and all aspects of my training have been improving, so I am very happy with that right now,” she said.

“I am so confident, and my physical and mental readiness is there, so I am looking forward to what is ahead.”

Jamaica’s team for Rio will be chosen following national trials.
