Olympian George, Josiah-Tanner named athletes of the year

Predictably, Olympian Winston George and Euleen Josiah-Tanner were named the Senior Male and Female Athletes-of-the-Year for 2015.

The two copped the awards when the Athletic Association of Guyana held their annual prize-giving ceremony on Friday night at Duke Lodge in Kingston.

George who has already qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was the obvious choice, following a year in which he lowered the national 400m record.

The 2012 Olympian clocked 45.25 seconds in the quarter mile event at the World Championships in Beijing, China last August.

George is currently campaigning on the US track and field circuit and was unable to attend the function on Friday.

While George recorded his exploits on the track, US based Josiah-Tanner was flawless on the road, winning several 10km events throughout the calendar year.

All round track and field athlete Leslain Baird was adjudged the runner up senior male athlete of the year while Natrena Hooper took the runner up position on the distaff side.

Other winners at the elegantly casually dressed fixture included: Andrea Foster (best junior female athlete), Linton Mentis (best junior male), Compton Caesar (best youth male) and Avon Samuels (best youth female).

Aniqua Powley, Arinze Chance, Matthew McKenzie and Natricia Hooper were the respective runners up behind the four winners.

Sprint sensation, Kenisha Phillips who became the fastest local female student athlete of all time at 14 years old last year, was too young to be considered for a youth or junior award but was however presented with special award for the Most Outstanding Athlete of 2015.

Julian Edmonds, who has coached or is coaching the likes of Samuels, Foster, the Hooper sisters, Phillips and McKenzie was named Coach-of-the-Year. During the event, AAG’s president, Aubrey Huston gave a brief overview of the year, while Secretary General of the GOA, Hector Edwards also made brief remarks. (Emmerson Campbell)
