Jamaica PM pledges support for cricket after Young Windies success

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica’s Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has praised the West Indies Under-19’s success at the recent ICC Youth World Cup and says her government will continue to pour the necessary resources into sports development.

West Indies won their first ever global youth title when they beat India Under-19s in the final of the event in Bangladesh last Sunday.

Simpson Miller, who has responsibility for sports, described cricket as a unifying force in the Caribbean region and a means of social upliftment.

“Beyond that, sport, including cricket, continues to be a catalyst for positive social transformation and an avenue for the advancement of our youth,” she said.

“Jamaica’s National Sport Policy is the strategic blueprint to move this sector forward. We continue to invest in infrastructure, and in the personal and professional development of our sports men and women.”
