De Nobrega edges Williams in thrilling finish

Team Alanis’ Paul DeNobrega out rode Team Gillette Evolution’s (TGE) Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams in a thrilling two-man sprint finish to cart off the spoils of the feature 35-lap event of the BR Investment/Dookie Construction criterium programme yesterday.

DeNobrega who recorded his first signature win of the season stopped the clock in one hour, 19minutes and 32 seconds in perfect conditions for racing at the National Park circuit.

His heroics, albeit by the slimmest of margins, broke the five-race winning streak of the TGE unit which have been dominating the local cycling circuit.

Shaquel Agard joined his breakaway mates on the podium while Orville Hinds and Michael Anthony (also of TGE) along with Silvio Inniss filled out the top six rewarding positions.

DeNobrega and Williams were part of break which was established in the eighth lap. A bunch of about five riders connected seven laps later but this was short lived as DeNobrega, Williams and Agard changed gears and the trio never relinquished their lead.

The three wheelsmen rode as a team until Williams threw teamwork out the window about 150m from the line. He rose from his saddled and barreled to the finish line but DeNobrega responded and had just enough left in the tank to snap TGE’s winning streak.
