Chase hopes CARIFTA athletes return with hardware

Chase’s Academic Foundation continues to impact students lives in and out the classroom.

On Tuesday, principal of the learning institution, Sir Henry Chase, presented tokens to the parents of five students from his institution, who will represent Guyana at the CARIFTA Games Easter weekend in Grenada.

Chase, who has granted in excess of 40 scholarships so far, stated the reason for his benevolence.

“Five of the 12 athletes shortlisted for CARIFTA attend my school and I have a passion for sport.

“I love this country and I am a nationalist and I believe if you are a nationalist, you go beyond the call of duty.”

Chase also stated that he is “hopeful that they can go out there and represent Guyana proudly and return with hardware.”

The CARIFTA Games-bound student athletes that attend Chase’s Academic Foundation are Kenisha Phillips, Samuel Lynch, Matthew McKenzie, Claudrice McKoy and Jeremy Garrett.

Phillips (Girls U-18 100m and 200m) will contest sprint events, while Lynch (400m and 800m Boys U 18), McKenzie (1500m and 5000m Boys U 20), McKoy (1500m and 3000m Girls U18) and Jeremy Garrett (800m and 1500m Boys U 18) will be under starters orders in the middle and long distance races.

The 45th CARIFTA Games is scheduled for March 26-28 at the National Athletic Stadium in St. George’s.

Guyana’s contingent departed Tuesday morning for the Spice Island.
