Demerara records massive victory over Essequibo

Demerara off-spinner Sagar Hatheramani’s six wicket haul helped set up a massive 135-run win over Essequibo in round two of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Under-17 Inter-County one-day tournament at the Enterprise Ground yesterday.

Hatheramani, the former Guyana U15 spinner snatched 6 for 25 including a hat-trick as Essequibo crashed to 78 all out in 28.1 overs, chasing 213 with Bomesh Ramdahin (22), Kevin Christian (15) and Chanderpaul Mohabir (14) the only batsmen to offer resistance.

Earlier, left-arm spinner Joel Fortune bamboozled the Demerara batters bagging 5 for 31. Robin Williams was the top scorer hammering  a 27-ball 41 with five fours.

Originally scheduled to be a 50-overs-a-side match, it was reduced to 46 overs.

Seamer Shamar Dusraj (1-45) removed skipper Bhaskar Yadram for 14.

Williams then joined the opener Mark Ramsammy and the two added 35 runs before Fortune removed the latter for 17. Alphius Bookie (19) and Williams added a solid 49 before the partnership was broken when Williams was out which was followed by the unfortunate run out of Bookie for 19.

Kurt Lovell (23) played well before he too fell to Fortune while pacer Anthony Antonio (26) Ashmead Nedd (14) and Rajendra Singh (17) held the lower order together.

In their reply, despite a start of 38 by Ramdahin and Christian, Hatheramani had other plans and began his onslaught by first removing Ramdahin while left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd picked up his only wicket, that of Christian for 15.

Things went downhill from there as Essequibo lost Orlando Jailall (0) who was run out while Hatheramani removed Chanderpaul Mohabir (14) and Quintin Sampson (2) to leave Essequibo 69-5.

The off-spinner then removed Joshua Jones (6), Fortune (0) and Besham Moses (0) to claim his hat-trick before the last wicket fell.

In the other second round match played at Wales, Berbice beat the U15 Select team by a whopping 107 runs. After scoring 151, Berbice then ran roughshod over the youngsters, knocking them over for 44 in 23 overs.

Off-spinner Kevin Sinclair (5-10) and left-arm spinner Kevin Omroa (4-11) ripped through the batting lineup.

The U15 Select had a good bowling outing with contributions from Gevon Schultz (3-13), Nigel Deodat (2-26), Dwayne Dick (2-32) and Seon Glasgow (2-32).

Sinclair (33) and Keith Simpson (26) were the top-scorers for Berbice. The third and final round is set for tomorrow with Essequibo playing the U15 team at Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground while Demerara plays Berbice at Bourda.
