Blade snaps while being sharpened, kills gold miner

A gold miner was killed in a freak accident on Sunday afternoon after a blade, which was being sharpened by his uncle, snapped broke and slashed his neck.

Dead is Darren Wade, 29, of Lichfield, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

The incident occured around 12:45 hrs on Sunday at Aranka Backdam, Cuyuni River. Darren Wade was slashed to the neck, while his uncle Floyd Wade sustained cuts to his right thigh and left thumb.

After Darren collapsed, both wades were ferried to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was officially pronounced dead. Floyd Wade was admitted for medical treatment.

According to reports reaching Stabroek News, at the time of the incident, Darren was lying in a hammock at the mining camp, while Floyd was standing some distance away sharpening the cutting machine blade. During this process, the sharp object snapped and its pieces flew around.

Efforts to contact the Wade family proved futile.

Darren’s body is currently at the Memorial Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
