Barnwell spurs DCC to first division title

Led by man of the Match Christopher Barnwell the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) strolled to another Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), GISE, Trophy Stall and Star Party Rentals  first division two-day title after securing first innings points against the Guyana Defence Force  (GDF) Sunday at the Georgetown Cricket Club  ground Bourda.

After knocking over GDF for 160 in their first innings thanks to  Barnwell (3-36), left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun (3-38) and seamer Paul Wintz (2-19), DCC piled on 302 in their first innings to gain a lead of 142.

West Indies Under 19 World Cup winning wicket-keeper Tevin Imlach, scored 73 while Wintz returned with bat in hand to chip in with 49.

Barnwell (70) and Jamal Hinckson (47) had made their contributions on  Saturday’s opening day. Pacer Romario Shepherd snatched up 5-39 for GDF.

GDF were 66-3 in their second innings when play ended having lost their three wickets for 10 runs through Barnwell who removed Leon Andrews (00), Quacey McPherson (00) and Hakeem Hinds (05) in no time.

Kevin Ramdeen (29) and Ishwar Singh (26), added 56 for the fourth wicket to helped steady the GDF innings until play was called off with about one hour of play remaining.

Earlier, after resuming on 184-5 with Kemol Savory (02) and Dennis Squires yet to get off the mark, Shepherd who resumed with three wickets under his belt, removed both batsmen to leave the score 197 for 7.  Imlach and Wintz then added 41 to take the score past 200 before the West Indies U19 player was stumped by wicket-keeper Dexter Solomon.

Imlach’s dismissal brought the pair of Dexter George and Wintz together and they frustrated the Soldiers with a stubborn 49-run partnership for the eight wicket.

At the presentation ceremony which followed Barnwell was adjudged Man of the Match. He also won awards for the batsman scoring the most runs in the tournament; for being the MVP of Zone B; for the highest score in the competition 254 against the University of Guyana and for having the best bowling performance in the final (6-71).

Other awards went to Dennis Squires for the most wickets, Imlach highest score in the final; Ramdeen most dismissals in Zone A and Haymant Persaud best bowling figures 7-18.
