Gladiators, Romario Gonsalves, Carlos Peterson, Nadina Taharally and Martin Webster lifted the marquee titles when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) staged its annual Claude Charles Intermediate and Master’s Championship yesterday at the Critchlow Labour College.
Gonsalves (equipped) and Peterson (unequipped), emerged overall winners of the Men’s Intermediate segment with wilks points of 461.36 and 409.15 respectively, while Webster (Master’s One) and Taharally (Master’s One) lifted the overall trophies in that division.
Gonsalves and Peterson who both copped the best lifter awards at the Novices Championships in March, continued their beastly form at yesterday’s championship.
Competing in the 59 kilo division, Gonsalves had a total of 532.5kg with a 227.5kg (squat), 87.5kg (bench press) and 217.5kg (dead lift) in the individual lifts.
The 93kg Peterson had a monster lift in the squat (235kg) and the heaviest dead lift of the day (280kg) to go along with a 130kg bench to amass a total of 645kgs.
It will be quite interesting when these two strongmen compete at the Senior Championships with the more seasoned lifters in November.
Meanwhile, the 48-year old Webster (93kg), amassed 337.5 wilks points which was tops amongst the three male Masters after squatting 190kg, bench pressing 132.5kg and dead lifting 210kg. His total was 532.5kg.
Frank Tucker who turned 64 years old on Saturday squatted 205kg, benched 105kg and dead lifted 197.5 kg with expert technique. He had a wilks points of 314.65 which earned him the Master’s Three title.
Taharally’s total was 310kg. The 43-year old who is also a seasoned body builder and Ms. Physique competitor had a best squat of 115kg, best bench of 65kg, and a dead lift of 135kgs. Her wilks points of 338.31 was the highest among the four competing females.
