Miner wounded with axe after row over water

An argument over water has landed a man in the hospital, where he is nursing a wound to his leg that was inflicted with a pick-axe.

Mark Adge, 37, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, said he was attacked by a co-worker at a mining pit in the North West District.

According to the man, who is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital, the attack stemmed from him drinking water from a bottle that apparently belonged to his co-worker. Adge said he was drinking the water from the bottle when his co-worker, who was also in the mines, sprayed him with dirty water.

According to him, he approached the co-worker and asked why he sprayed him with the dirty water. Adge said that the man complained that he put his mouth to the man’s bottle. “I know to me self I did not put that man bottle to my mouth. It was far away but I was catching the water to drink,” Adge told Stabroek News.

According to the wounded man, unknown to him, the man picked up the axe and struck him on his left leg. He said that afterward he was immediately rushed to the city hospital by friends.

Adge said that he did not report the attack but he was told by fellow workers that his attacker had gone into hiding because the police are looking for him.

Adge said he does not know when he will be discharged, but being in the hospital doing nothing is depressing him since he misses being outdoors and riding on his motorbike.  Adge gets around the hospital with the aid of crutches and solicits help from family members when they visit.
