Fraud accused agrees to repay $110,000

A South Ruimveldt woman was brought before a city magistrate yesterday to answer to a fraud charge for allegedly converting $110,000 for her own use.

Robin DeFlorimonte of 1268 Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt was brought before Magistrate Faith McGusty, who read a charge which stated that on November 17, at Georgetown, with the intent to defraud, she obtained from Cevika Gonsalves the sum of $110,000, by falsely pretending to be in a position to rent her an apartment  at Lot 1268 Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt.

DeFlorimonte, who rents homes for a living entered a plea of not guilty.

According to her attorney, the defendant was approached by Gonsalves who was desirous of renting an apartment. DeFlorimonte allegedly told the complainant that the apartment she desired was under renovation, and that the money given to the defendant would be used to complete the upgrade. The attorney added that the complainant was initially indecisive about renting the apartment from DeFlorimonte, who eventually continued the renovations.

The court heard that the defendant was prepared to refund the entire sum, and immediately offered to repay Gonsalves  $50,000

Gonsalves received the said payment from the defendant, and the matter was adjourned to December 21, when it will be heard by the Chief Magistrate.
