East Berbice floodwater receding

After an entire day of flooding, residents of East Berbice were yesterday tasked with cleaning up as the water in most areas had receded.

While the floodwaters had completely gone in some areas, in others water was still in residents’ yards. However, this was seen as a good thing by many.

“As long as me can clean me house and deh inside, me ain’t mine bout the water outside,” one woman from Canefield Settlement said. While the water has completely receded from the front section of Canefield Settlement, the back portion of the village still had water in the ballfields and yards, and most of the streets were dry. The situation was the same for most villages in Canje.

In areas such as Gay Park, Overwinning, and Glasgow located in greater New Amsterdam and East Bank Berbice the floodwater has already disappeared, residents informed Stabroek News.

According to a regional official, the pumps in the region have been up and running since late Friday evening.

Meanwhile, floodwater has also receded in villages in the Corentyne area.

The receding of floodwater resulted in shoppers being out in their numbers in New Amsterdam. Vendors yesterday said that business “took a good turn”.

It now seems that Christmas plans are back on board and Berbicians are pleading with the regional authorities to do everything in their power to avoid another flooding of such a magnitude, so that they can enjoy their long-awaited holiday.
