Duo remanded over Kingston Seawall robberies

Two men were yesterday remanded to prison after they appeared in a city court charged with committing two robberies on the same day and location.

Jason Thomas, 22, and Christopher Niles, 21, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan charged with robbing Sevil Apple of a brown wallet, valued $7,000, a bag pack, valued $10,000 and $5000. It is also alleged that the defendants also robbed Ucila Trelfall of a handbag valued $10,500. Both robberies occurred on February 28 at the Kingston Seawall.

Thomas, of Lot 19 Canje Berbice and Niles, of Lot 1 Uitvlugt, West Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution objected to bail based on the gravity of the charge, the penalty it attracts and the fact that the defendants provided the police with different addresses to what were given in court. The court heard that Niles told the police that he lived at Lot 11 Tucville Housing Scheme, Georgetown, while Thomas said that he resided at Lot 13 Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown. The court also heard that the items were recovered by a police patrol.

Niles and Thomas were remanded to prison and are set to make their next court appearance on March 15.
