REO, APNU+AFC councillors walk out from Region Three meeting

The Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Three walked out of the Council’s statutory meeting yesterday along with nine councillors of the APNU+AFC coalition after the regional chairman asked for a report.

The chairman, Julius Faerber, who represents the PPP/C, told Stabroek News that the REO, Dennis Jaikarran was supposed to write to the Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin, requesting a report on the plantain chip factory at Wakenaam, Essequibo River.

When the chairman asked him for the report yesterday he responded in a “hostile” manner that he “had no report to give to anybody” and he picked up his books and walked out, along with nine others.

Contacted last evening, Faerber told Stabroek News (SN) that as clerk of council, Jaikarran was supposed to produce the report at the meeting. He said that they were at ‘Matters arising out of Minutes’ when he asked for the report.

He said that Jaikarran’s behaviour cannot be accepted and he has to apologise before he returns to the next meeting.

Attempts made by this newspaper to contact the REO last evening for a comment proved futile.

The meeting continued with discussions on various issues, including the shortage of insulin and drugs at the hospitals and health centres in the region.

They also spoke about the state of the health centre compound, which is overgrown with weeds.

They also discussed the insanitary conditions that the compounds of the schools are in, even though the new term begins on September 5. A councillor told SN that the REO had said that there is no money to clean them.
