Fraud accused taxi driver offers to repay victim

A taxi driver, accused of defrauding a man of almost $100,000 that was entrusted to him, on Monday promised a city magistrate that he would repay the money.

Chetram Suknandan, 37, of 135 Grove Squatting area, told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan that he is willing to repay the virtual complainant, Shawn Baldeo, because he does not want a problem with the man.

Suknandan, a driver at Green Ice Taxi Service, pleaded not guilty to a fraudulent conversion charge. The charge stated that on October 10, 2016, at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, Suknandan was entrusted by Baldeo with $90,000 to pay his mortgage. However, it is alleged that Suknandan converted the money for his own use and benefit.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, who had no objections to the accused receiving bail, did not offer any further details of the charge.

As a result of his offer, Suknandan was given until the end of the week to repay the Baldeo. The case will be heard again tomorrow.
