A Tucberg Park, New Amsterdam man was remanded to prison on Monday when he was charged with possession of a pistol. Magistrate Rhondell Weaver denied bail to Konata Simpson, of Lot 13 Tucberg Park, when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on the charge of possession of a firearm without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Simpson is accused of having a .32 pistol. He was placed under arrest on Wednesday last, when police conducted a search at his residence.
Inspector Godfrey Playter told the court that during the search the police found the gun in close proximity to Simpson.
However, Simpson’s attorney, Charandass Persaud, argued that the lawmen did not find the firearm on his client. According to Persaud’s argument, the firearm was found on the premises where Simpson resides with other persons. A police source had told Stabroek News that the gun was discovered some eight feet from where the accused was at the time of the raid. It was supposedly stashed behind of a fowl pen in the yard.
Simpson is to return to court on February 24 for trial.
