T&T man fined for defrauding hotel

Anthony Nester, the Trinidadian national who was charged with incurring over $250,000 debt at the Brandsville Hotel last year, was yesterday found guilty of the crime and fined.

The charge against Nestor, 28, stated that, between April 1st, 2016 and April 15th, 2016 in Georgetown, he incurred a debt of $260,824.14 at the Brandsville Hotel by falsely pretending that he had a valid credit card to pay.

Nester, who was on trial before city magistrate Judy Latchman, had denied the charge.

During her sentencing, Magistrate Latchman said she took into consideration the way in which the crime was carried out, the fact that the defendant is yet to repay the hotel and the length of time he would have been in prison.

Nester was then ordered to repay the hotel $260,824.14, and fined $100,000 with an alternative of 36 months in jail if he is unable to pay. Immediately after Nester has repaid the hotel and paid his fine or served the jail term, he is to be deported to Trinidad.

Prior to sentencing Nester, Magistrate Latchman noted that he told the court that he was a Guyanese citizen, but reports from the Guyana Police Force’s Fraud Squad revealed that he is indeed a Trinidadian national.

Nester was also questioned about whether he had pending matters in Trinidad. He stated that he was unsure and only knew of a vehicle matter.

Nester was also accused of committing a similar offence at the Opus Hotel, where he incurred a debt of $66,898, and at the El Dorado Inn, where he incurred a debt of $135,000.
