Hikers crowned 2017 Farfan & Mendes First-division outdoor hockey champs

Striker Shane Samuels netted a helmet-trick for Pepsi Hikers who swamped St Stanislaus 14-0 in the final match of the Farfan & Mendes male division-one outdoor hockey league at the St Stanislaus ground, yesterday.

Hikers’ victory, which earned them three points, pushed them past Bounty Georgetown Cricket Club on the point’s standings which handed them the 2017 title.

Samuels began the assault by netting in the fourth and 18th minute while Jamarj Assanha and Robert France added goals in the 8th and 25th minute respectively to leave the score on 4 – 0 at the end of the first half.

The second half was much worse for St Stanislaus as Hikers added 10 more goals by skillfully sneaking through their defence. The goals came from Assanah (36th), Aroydy Branford (41st and 51st), France (43rd), Jerazeno Bell (44th and 60th), Samuels (51st and 53rd), Andrew Stewart (60th) and Tivesarid Garnett in the 60th to seal the one-sided affair.

Stewart and Garnett’s goals came during penalty corners with the clock stopped.

Meanwhile, Hikers’ midfielder Assanah was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the league for his goal scoring and assists efforts.

GCC, who ended the league on 13 points were the runners-up while Old Fort and St. Stanislaus, both of whom failed to register a win during the league ended at the bottom of the table.
