Winners Connection upsets Eagles to win Mayor’s Cup competition

Winners Connection clinched the inaugural Linden Town Week Mayor’s Cup Football Championship, upsetting highly touted Eagles FC 4-2 via penalty kicks on Tuesday at the Mackenzie Sports Club [MSC] ground, Linden.

Locked 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra time in front of a sizable crowd, Winners Connection displayed superior mental fortitude to secure the coveted title.

They recorded four of their five attempts to walk away the happier of the two teams, with Stanford Bovell the only player to fail from the distance.

On the other side, Eagles failed to hold its nerve as Dellon Charter and Kellon Primo failed to convert, effectively sealing their defeat.

With the win, Winners Connection walked away with $400,000 and the championship trophy. On the other hand, the losers are slated to walk away with $300,000.

Prior to the shoot-out victory, Quacey Quintin handed Eagles the initial lead, as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 35th minute.

It was a fortuitous conversion, as an initial strike was fumbled by the goalkeeper, allowing the onrushing Quintin to finish into the back of the net.

Eagles would maintain their advantage heading into the halftime break. Winners Connection would secure the equaliser in the 53rd minute via Shaquille Frank.  The goal was similar in nature to the Eagles conversion, as an initial shot was parried by the custodian into the path of Frank, who simply stabbed his effort unchallenged into the net.

Meanwhile, Net-Rockers downed Capital FC by a 2-1 score. Royston Fraser and Joel Isaacs were ion target in the victory in the 28th and 70th minute respectively.

For the losers, Tyreek McAllister found the back of the net in the 39th minute. Due to the outcome, Net-Rockers will pocket $200,000, with Capital FC slated to walk away with $100,000.

The match started brightly for Net-Rockers, as the experienced Fraser dribbled two Capital FC players while racing into the penalty area, before finishing past the advancing goalkeeper.

The lead would not remain intact, as Capital FC grabbed the equaliser five minutes before the halftime interval. McAllister made his presence felt, blasting a powerful effort from the top of the penalty box into the back of the net.

Nevertheless, Isaacs would have the final say in the outcome, uncorking a curling free-kick from outside the 18 yard area, which sailed past the opposing custodian.

Prior to the commencement of the third place matchup, the National Boys U17 team defeated the UDFA U20 side by a 2-0 score.
